Mouthwatering Besan and flaxseed ladoos – healthy and super delicious! A perfect dessert to make for festivals and gluten-free too!

Besan and Flaxseed ladoo STML 2020

I am a Besan (Gram flour) Ladoo Fan-I mean a literal die-hard fan. My dad used to ship home-made besan ladoos to my hostel at University every semester. Those ladoos were made of four ingredients, just four – Ghee, Besan, white sugar, and cardamom. If you have been following the blog for a while, you may know this is not what this recipe will entail, because we avoid white sugar completely.

My parents, too, have drifted away from this recipe (to avoid white sugar), so introducing to all of you these Besan and flaxseed ladoos, which I am sure can be your new favorite too. Find other healthy nutritious sweet recipes here.

What are Ladoos?

Ladoos are Indian sweets, which are broadly truffles or sweet spheres filled with the goodness of ghee, sweetener, grain(s), nuts, and a tinge of cardamom. There are plenty of variations to it and a variety of ladoos available in India. With Diwali, one of the most celebrated Indian festivals, around the corner, ladoos are very commonly prepared in Indian households.

Why make Besan and Flaxseed Ladoos?

These ladoos are delicious and healthy! A while ago, I wrote an article on healthy substitutes for white sugar. Jaggery was one of them and can be used in Indian desserts. On the other hand, flaxseeds are a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids which is essential for us. Read the article on Omega-3 fatty acids here.

With that, let’s get into my besan and flax seed ladoos, which are our new favorites, and once you get used to these, you may find it hard to go back to the sugar besan ladoos. These are that good! Plus, these are gluten-free! So, Let’s dive in.

How to make “Besan and flaxseed Ladoos”?

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Flaxseed Powder (Read 10 healthy foods to eat everyday here)

On a stove top, in a pan, a low flame, dry roast flaxseeds until brown. Now grind them to powder and transfer to a bowl.

Step 2: Start making the Besan and Flaxseed ladoos

In a pan on a stovetop, add ghee. Turn the flame to low-medium.

Step 3

When ghee turns hot, add besan and roast until golden brown. Flame stays at low-medium all this while. Keep stirring. Your kitchen will fill with aroma. That is another indicator that the besan is almost done.

Step 4

Mix well and turn the flame off. Please transfer the mix to a large bowl now.

Step 5

Add roasted flaxseed powder. Let the mix cool down to room temperature.

Step 6

Add jaggery powder, cardamom powder, and powdered almonds. Mix well. Don’t let the mix become really cold or it can become difficult to bind the ladoos.

Step 7

Apply ghee to your hands to grease them, roll the mix above into ladoos or bites. Serve. You may refrigerate them and they last for a good week and more.
